5-GENIN or fifth-generation Internet is a worldwide wideband communications system supported by a terabits-wide laser backbone located at synchronous altitude, which uses laser links to interconnect satellites with airborne and ground-based platforms[1].

5-GENIN's synchronous backbone consists of three synchronous satellites separated at 120 degrees about Earth's centre[1].

Future interplanetary nodes built by NASA and NOAA weather satellites could also become part of 5-GENIN, while DoD and other governmental, industrial, and commercial organisations could use it as well[1].

Optical ground stations could be installed in Peru, Chile, Australia, Kuwait, China, and South Africa, and these countries could be gateways to the rest of the world[1].
