JnanaBase was taken offline on 4 November 2007 at 09:55 UTC+02.
When the site started it operated from the jnana.wikinerds.org subdomain. It moved to the jnanabase.org domain in August 2005.
JnanaBase was a general-purpose wiki which allowed any legal content to be put in it, and therefore had absolutely no content restrictions except for the requirement that all text and uploaded images been licensed under the GFDL.
IntelliWiki was a project started by a JnanaBase user with the purpose of creating an artificial intelligence readable wiki. The project got its own wiki namespace.
JnanaBase in its infancy started accepting Wikipedia articles that were voted for deletion.
JnanaBase had very liberal policies and granted easily administration access to new members. Several Wikipedians became its early members.
The wiki was gradually fell into disuse. It also faced a serious wikispam problem.
Its database grew up to 2GB.
It used MediaWiki versions 1.3, 1.5 (up to 1.5.6), and 1.11.0.
It was initially hosted in a small VPS in Utah, USA, but it was later moved on a dedicated server in Copenhagen, Denmark, sharing it with the current Wikinerds wiki and other stuff.
User:NSK, its founder, had no time to maintain the project anymore and therefore asked for a new maintainer. As no new maintainer was found, JnanaBase was taken offline on 4 November 2007.
JnanaBase was an experiment on freedom: What would users do if they had access to a free wiki without any limitations on what they can post (excluding legal and copyright limitations)? Generally speaking, many users abused the service. The conclusion of the experiment was that 'free for all' wikis tend to degenerate into chaos if there is not a dedicated team of admins with lots of free time to maintain them.
