Monty Python

Monty Python is a good example of popular culture that fits nicely into nerd popular culture.

The reasons for this are threefold: First, Pythons themselves were well-educated; second, the sketch comedies written by the Pythons require intelligence on part of the viewer in order to be understood; third, Pythons regularly reference topics that are likely to be of interest to nerds. For example, a sketch about a football game between German and Greek philosophers once appeared in a Python production.
